Week 3 Web Conference Reflection

Week 3 Web Conference Reflection
EDLD 5398 - Internship in Administration
March 18, 2012
The web conference began at 4:00 on March 18, 2012.  Dr. Kay Abernathy facilitated the conference.  We began by discussing the courses that we were substituting in our course embedded reflections.  Some chose to add the coursework that was added for the Technology Leadership coursework.  One of these courses was added for the Principal Certification path was School Community Relations in place of Digital Graphics.   Dawn Kirkland has been monitoring our coursework and was able to assist in answering many of the questions asked about substitution coursework.
We took time to discuss principal certification questions and to discuss the requirements for the necessary uploads of assignments in the TK20.  Dr. Abernathy added that if we had any questions concerning necessary uploads to the TK20, we could address these questions to Pam Comer.  If we notify Pam Comer, she will be able to assist with the requirements for the TK20.  These Principal’s certification documents are not required to be posted to our Wiki eportfolio.  We can email these documents to Dr. Sandy Rucker.  We will need to email the Resource Course Embedded Summary Report and the Resource Course Supervised Report.  We will also need to post these documents to the TK20.
We also discussed how our grade would be calculated.  Our final grade is calculated by the work that is submitted to our eportfolio. This grade will consist of necessary documents required for our internship.  We will also need to post our Educational Technology documents to the TK20.
We discussed the ILD.  Some students have already taken the ILD and it ranges from approximately $400 to $600 depending on the region.  Dr. Abernathy pointed out that we could also take the ILD in the summer when Dr. Jenkins for approximately $350.  The state required the ILD for certification.    There are also training sites at  http://www5.esc13.net/ild/trainings.html.
We concluded the web conference with a reminder that our professors are ready to assist with any needs we might have on the necessary coursework.  The next web conferences will be held next weekend.

EDLD 5366 Digital Graphics and Web Design

ELDL 5366 Digital Graphics and Web Design
Course Reflection

The Digital Graphics and Web Design has taught me so much about additional useful technology tools.   In Week 1, we were introduced to the principles of design. This assignment helped us learn to identify the principles in three graphic designs. We analyzed three types of design products:  a website, an infographic, and a poster. We were able to use a table to record our analysis of each of the three graphic design examples. We also used the table to record an example of each principle.
We took time to investigate ancient manuscripts and books that we used to give us insight into the history of graphic communication and how these principles of design were used in early manuscripts.  We wrote a 100 word reflection and posted to our wiki site.
We learned that the British Library site is an amazing site where we can take time to reflect on beautiful books and manuscripts that have been written and illustrated over the years.  It allowed us time to turn back the pages of time and view ancient writings that were illustrated with such deep grace and symbolism.  The manuscript I selected was written around the 1230’s and had beautiful illustrations.
I created a poster and in creating this poster product about our upcoming district technology in-service day I used colorful and vivid clip art, word art, and images to create my final product.
During week three, our team created a Web Site where we developed a home page containing our group logo and our site overview, a parent page, a regular education teacher page, a special education teacher page, a how-to page, and a cyber ethics page which included the Creative Commons Information.  We brainstormed in creating our personal logo about words and goals that described us as a person, a teacher, and a learner.  We utilized the design principles to evoke the descriptive works for the design of the logo.  We focused on various colors, layouts, and other elements that we could incorporate into our logo.  We used the design elements and principles of contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity to incorporate into the logo.  We then described and outlined how the logo reflected us as a person, a teacher, and a learner.
During the next week we used www.scatch.com to create an animation project including at least ten moves or steps.  I learned a great deal during this animation project.  At the end of the week we uploaded this animation project to our online Wiki and Blog sites.
During the fourth week we completed the creation of our group Google Site with our group incorporating the design principles of our group logo.  We further developed those six pages of our web site with a home page containing our logo and an overview of the site.  The parent page contained resources related to the integration of teaching, learning, and technology.   The site also contained a regular education teacher page providing technology resources and research on current uses of technology and a special needs teacher page that provided resources and current research on various uses of technology useful for special needs students.  We also included a how to page for teachers and student that described our animation project with instructions for at least two other Web 2.0 tools with instructions.  Finally, we included a digital ethics page to provide resources for digital citizenship, ethical uses of technology, and creative common license.  We allowed for an option on our site for others to provide feedback and comments on each of the pages.
The Digital graphics and web site design course definitely provided an opportunity to utilize many new Web 2.0 technology tools and a collaborative group opportunity to create a site working with others on new and innovative methods to work with other teachers and students to help make us better educators.

Week 3 Animation Project

Week 2 Personal Digital Logo

EDLD 5366 Week 1 Reflection

The British Library site is an amazing site where we can take time to reflect on beautiful books and manuscripts that have been written and illustrated over the years.  It allows us to turn back the pages of time and view ancient writings that were illustrated with such deep grace and symbolism.  The manuscript I selected was written around the 1230’s and has beautiful illustrations.

My first impression of the illustration and manuscript is the colorful alignment of the image.  The image itself appears to leap off the ancient page to reveal its story.  The story takes us to a place where animals such as simple goats and bees are transforms into fantastic, magical, and fantasy creatures such as unicorns, mermaids, and griffins.  The illustration that I selected depicts a knight that robs a small innocent tiger cub from its mother.  The story then explains to it reader that the tiger can outrun the knight riding his horse.  Since the knight cannot run faster than the tiger, it tosses a mirror at the mother tiger.  The mother tiger stops running and looks at her reflection in the mirror.  Instead of thinking the reflection she sees is indeed her own reflection, she assumes the reflection is her tiger cub.  The knight is successful in misleading the mother tiger into believing her tiger cub is safe.

There are examples of all four of the basic design principles in this illustration.  There is enough contrast between the lines and the shapes to make the colors of the illustration vivid and dramatic.  The repetition of the shapes adds visual interest and strengthen the image for the viewer’s enhancement.  The alignment of the boxed shapes around the illustration give the viewer the purpose and focal point of the drawing. The method the illustrator uses for proximity keeps the illustration organized so that the reader can easily remember the illustration while reading the manuscript.

The author used methods through these vivid and dramatic illustrations to build pictures in the readers mind.  These stunning illustrations could almost stand alone and reveal the story.  The illustrations are brilliantly done and meticulously drawn.  The British Library is a wonderful resource where we are given the opportunity to turn the pages of time and reflect on illustrations and writings of the ancient past.
